A baged SO JUICY roast chicken by Maggi

I gave the grocery store chickens a rest this week and decided to make my own meal.  It’s not a rotisserie chicken by any stretch but rather a baked roast chicken cooked in an oven bag. Yes, that’s right, in a bag.  Let me explain; I picked up a pack of Maggi’s SO JUICY bag and seasoning, roast chicken recipe and let me tell you, I was pleasantly surprised.

There are multiple ways to cook a whole chicken in the oven. The usual way would be in a roasting pan with a lid, the bird sitting on top of probably sliced potatoes and carrot. To cook one in a bag, why that’s preposterous! I have to say, bag cooking is a very convenient method of cooking really and I would consider it to be a step above the grocery store chicken.

Maggi has the seasoning separated in the bottom of the packet and the cooking bag in the top. You have to be careful not to cut or damage the cooking bag when you tear open the package.

The instructions are quite simple; rinse the chicken, oil it up, place in bag with seasoning, close the bag and cook for 45-50minutes at 375F. Oh and do make sure you poke a few holes in the bag to let the steam escape.

While it’s an easy process, the hardest part was fitting a greased up whole chicken in the bag, then shaking it around to evenly coat it. This bag does have a size limit and most chickens would fit especially when they are greased. After the bird was safely in the sack, I placed it on a baking sheet and into the oven it went.

After about 50 minutes, It was cooked. You can see a little burned seasoning stuck to the bag. It looks like a messy sight. I slice open the bag and reveal a perfectly cooked roast chicken. This smells really good. I’m impressed so far.

It looks uniformly cooked and seasoned. Good on me! There’s lots of juice too.

Okay, now to critique my work, I cut into the breast. It’s cooked and tender. Great, I’m feeling excited about this. Next, I pick at the leg, the meat flakes off well. Everything looks passable and I get the nod from my family, but thumbs down on the skin, It's soggy and slimy to the touch, definitely not how I like my skin.I don’t know how you could fix that, perhaps open the bag up and broil?

The real test now is the tasting, how is this Maggi seasoning? I take a strip of white meat. It’s tasty. I recognize the flavouring straight away. It’s very close to what chicken soup tastes like. Weird!?! Not necessarily a bad thing but it definitely tastes like the quintessential chicken soup base. The dark meat is just as tasty and eaten along with the skin you really get that salty chicken soup flavour. It’s a bit overwhelming at times.

We have a winner here as far as cooking methods. This roast chicken was not horrible, I mean, I did cook it myself. Truth be told, you’d have to seriously mess this up to not have an edible meal here.  The seasoning and bag method is fool proof. The bag is such that it bakes and steams itself. You will get perfectly cooked chicken every time. The only issue I have is the over powering flavouring of the seasoning.

Maggi  does offer a variety of seasoning bag packs which I’m excited to report on. I wonder if they will be just as flavourful? As for this seasoning bag, I recommend trying this product to make your own fresh whole baked chicken. It’s an easy way to do so without the fuss of pulling out the roasting pan and all the food prep that goes with it.

Has anyone tried this? If so, what did you think?
