Metro; more money, less chicken

I decided to do a bit of grocery shopping at Metro this week and you know what that means? That’s right! I picked up a fresh and tasty ready-made rotisserie chicken, complete with sides. It was a family feast, befitting for Royalty. At least, that’s what I thought until I arrived home and had it sitting on a plate.

At first glance in the hot food case, there were a very few to pick from. A surprise really since I was there just after 5pm. I know that Metro does offer a few different flavours; however, only BBQ was available. I did the best I could to pick what I believed to be the perfect chicken. For $9.99 this BBQ chicken was mine.

I take the lid off; it’s still steaming of chicken goodness. This is a good sign and it’s warm too. You can tell looking at the chicken that it was cooked and possibly boarder line overcooked. Looking at the leg, you can see it shrank up. That’s a bit concerning.

The skin was definitely more cooked, appears tighter. I didn’t see very much seasoning at all and down the centre of the bird was trail of BBQ sauce goo. Typically, there is a bit of au jus in the container but there wasn’t any more than about a table spoon.

I grab the knife and immediately cut into the leg and thigh. Dark meat is always moist but the real test is the breast meat. First, I cut through the breast bone, no problem, it cuts ok. No signs of pink but I notice it’s not shredding.

Time to taste! I peel a bit of the breast meat. Ok. It’s cooked yes, but dry-ish. It could have been moister to be honest. It has that chicken flavor that I was looking for but that’s it. This is again similar to what it would taste like if you boiled it. I decide to try a piece of the thigh. With dark meat, it’s hard to tell anything is off because naturally the meat is moist compared to the breast but I still don’t really get anything special here, no real flavor from it. On the positive, the skin was cooked pretty good and had a nice chew to it.

I should mention that this is a Mammoth chicken—a term used on the Metro packaging. I have to say, this was not very mammoth at all. In fact, it visually appeared smaller than Food Basics chicken and even more so when I started carving up the pieces.

I found that it was a bit fattier than the Food Basics chicken, seemed like they tucked the fat underneath. Upon further inspection, I confirmed that this chicken was overcooked since the fat was all shrivelled up underneath.

Overall, I was not too impressed with Metro chicken.  I had higher hopes for it. I don’t know if it’s just a store thing or what but, if this is how they do their chickens I’m a no on this one. I suppose I could try another chicken at some point and see if I still feel the same.

Have you tried the chicken from Metro? What did you think?
