Happy Thanksgiving! So thankful for 44th Street
Today is our Thanksgiving and what better way to celebrate this occasion with turkey... a convenience meal of turkey compliments of "44th Street". A brand-name found in most grocery stores which offer roast beef, pulled pork, and ribs just to name a few. I have to say, I was a bit dubious about the prospect of a a convenience boxed roast turkey dinner but then I thought it would be a good opportunity to showcase this fast meal product.
After I slid the cardboard packaging off, I peered through the plastic cover to see what appeared to be a one small turkey breast sitting in juice all shrink wrapped. The size of this turkey breast was definitely on the smaller side. In fact, I don't think it was much bigger than a regular sized whole uncooked chicken breast.
The packaging gave some cooking details or should I say re heating instructions. You can use the microwave, stove top, and oven on this depending on how much time you have. I chose the microwave; 5 minutes plus 2 minutes for sitting. Cooked sides, I had this meal on plates within 15 minutes. How's that for fast?
I cut the package open, it smells like turkey yes but more like soup and I'm guessing its the juice that came with. Still steaming with turkey goodness, I take a knife out and start carving it up pretending that I'm slicing it off a bird. The meat is very tender for sure and looks like how a home cooked turkey would look. I should mention that this is a skinless piece of turkey breast.
I taste the juice. It has a good flavour to it, reminds me of chicken/turkey stock more than anything and maybe even soup. It's not too salty either. While the juice is thicker than usual it is definitely not gravy. The consistency is somewhere in the middle. As for the taste of the meat, it is turkey breast. Very moist but not shredding. As you cut, it is still held together. It has a good flavour. I'm impressed with this.
I of course had this meal served up with mash potatoes and I want to note that there is enough gravy to do use with it. I would comfortably say that this box meal would be ideal for 2-3 people depending on how much meat you want to eat.
For $13.99 this boxed turkey meal could be yours. Consider that an uncooked turkey breast can cost at least $15. Now granted you would probably get a lot more meat compared to this box meal; however factoring time, convenience and energy needed to use the oven, I believe it's reasonably priced.
44th Street.. it's not bad for what it is. Would a home cooked turkey breast be better? Absolutely, but we all know that. I'm just saying that this is a very good alternative to cooking a meal.
Has anyone tried this before? What did you think?
